Another quick update (and possible upcoming blog sale?)

Hey y'all!

At around midnight last night I finally got home after being in Europe for six whole months. My flight left from Madrid at 1pm, or 5am in the US, so I was in the process of traveling for about 20 hours. It's okay though, because on my flight I watched three movies. I watched Superman, which wasn't really that great, Edward Scissorhands, and Water for Elephants, which was AMAZING.

I haven't posted anything on this blog yet because I haven't had the time with traveling and everything, and I wanted to get some posts up on my study abroad blog, madeleinestudiesabroad.blogspot.com , in case you wanted to see my photos of France, Italy, and Spain.

I have a few things coming up for you guys while I'm home before I leave for France again for the next five months.

I have a bunch of empties coming up soon, and I also have a haul coming your way, because the things we use up gotta get replaced. I also made an order on drugstore.com because I needed to get stuff for my upcoming semester in Paris. I finished up a mascara that I'll be reviewing as well, and since I haven't worn nail polish in almost six months, I'm about to go into overdrive with the Nail Love posts, so look out for a lot of nail art.

I'm going to be clearing out my closet, accessories,  and jewelry box soon. I'm either going to sell some things on ebay or just give it away to charity, but if you guys would be interested in a blog sale, let me know down below. It's just after six months living out of only a big backpack that I realize how many things I really don't need or use, so I'd rather have things go to people that will use and enjoy them more than I do. I have a lot of vintage stuff and then some other things that I just outgrew.

But yeah, get ready for some posting after this little holiday break.

Happy holidays, everyone!
XO

Jenna Marbles is amazing

If you don't already subscribe to Jenna Marbles on youtube already, I highly recommend it. She just put out this gem this past week, and it's hilarious as usual.

What do you nails say about you?

My favorite beauty bloggers and youtubers

There are so many youtubers and beauty bloggers out on the internet now, and sometimes I just don't have time to watch all of them. This is a list of bloggers that I always make time for, however. I trust all of them for good product recommendations, reviews, and tips, and they're also just fun to watch.

Lisa Eldridge
Lisa Eldridge has been in the makeup industry for years and probably does all of your favorite celebrities' makeup. Luckily, she passes on her expertise to us through her amazing youtube videos. Every time I watch her I learn something new, and it's always helpful to take her tips to my job when I'm doing peoples' makeup. She's also just so classy and calming to watch.

Caroline Hirons - Beauty Mouth
Caroline is probably the most amazing skincare expert, and I've definitely learned so much from her that's helped me with my skincare routine. She takes shit from no one and puts none of it out herself. If you just want to-the-point answers for your skincare questions, you should definitely follow her blog. I've spent hours just reading her past posts and skincare cheat sheets.

Emily - Emilynoel83, Beauty Broadcast
An ex-news anchor, Emily puts out very professional videos, and she's very well-spoken and educated. I also love just how honest she is. She will never accept money in return for reviews, so you know everything she says is what she thinks. She's basically tried everything out there, so her recommendations tend to be the most reliable for me (we also have a similar skin type and same skin color, so it's also helpful when I need to know my shade in a product - I just get the one she uses). I also really appreciate her taste for drugstore products. She knows something doesn't have to be high end in order for it to be awesome, and if she does use high end, you can be sure she'll throw some cheaper dupes your way. Check out her other channel, beauty broadcast express, for short but complete reviews of a different product everyday.

Alix - I Covet Thee
Whenever Alix puts up a video on youtube, I basically jump for joy. Her voice is relaxing, reviews are to the point and usually spot on (we also share the same skin type, so whatever works for her almost always works for me and my oily skin), and being as drop-dead gorgeous as she is, if anything she mentions can make me look like her, hell yeah, I'm buyin'.

Anna, Lily, and Amelia - Vivianna Does Makeup, Lily Pebbles (What I Heart Today), Liana Beauty
For those that want to read/watch a few girls who are just as obsessed about beauty as you are, Anna, Lily, and Amelia are the ones to follow. Their blog posts make me feel like I'm reading a magazine, and their pictures are fantastic. Follow them on instagram, too, and drool at all the beautiful makeup they post. They've also got some really amazing makeup tips and life-hacks that are easy enough for anyone to incorporate into their routines. And when they do videos together? It's always funny to watch.

Fleur - Fleur de Force
Fleur is actually one of the first beauty gurus I ever subscribed to. She doesn't beat around the bush, is honest, and has great recommendations. Any questions or doubts you could possibly have about a product, she answers them. If you follow her instagram, too, you'll get the most adorable pictures of her puppies that will basically just make your day.

Estée - Essiebutton
I watch Estée for her great product reviews, but I also watch her because she is so freaking hilarious. She's one of the only gurus who will literally make me laugh out loud while watching an empties video (hers are my favorites) or monthly favorites, and she's just someone you want to be best friends with. Her vlogs are great, too, and you'll get to watch her and her hilarious boyfriend and beautiful rescue greyhound on their daily adventures. Plus she's Canadian. How can you not love a Canadian???

Tati - Glamlife Guru
Tati is also one of those people who's super fun to watch, and she always has great tips for you that you might have never heard of. She dabbles in high-end and drugstore makeup, and she's another person I really trust when I'm shopping for a new product. If Tati gives her stamp of approval, I can usually count on a product to be good.

Jessica, Kate, and Meg. Jessica Beautician, gh0stparties, Lipssofacto/MeganIsobel
Jessica and Meg just know so much about skincare, and their personalities are just so magnetic. Kate is also one of the most funny people on youtube, and her instagram pictures (mostly of her kitty, Mouse) always make me smile.

Who are your favorite beauty bloggers?

Quick (Makeup/skincare) Update

I've been making little changes with my routine lately, and I'd thought I'd update you guys real quick on how that's working out for me.

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

The other part of the skincare routine, masks.

Masks are amazing for pampering yourself, but I do think they can really give your skin a swift kick up the ass when it's looking less than pretty, you're targeting a specific problem, or just want something for maintenance every week. I like to have three kinds in my arsenal: one to exfoliate, one to purify, and one to moisturize.

Deodorant Dilemma: Going natural

Deodorant is the one thing I absolutely hate shopping for. Here's why: The stuff I use will probably give me cancer, but I still keep buying it anyway, then feeling guilty. Yeahhh.

Usually, I go for anti-perspirants, which not only keep me smelling good, but also keep me dry. My default is definitely Dove. It works and it's moisturizing, too. I love the Cucumber and Green Tea (I've gone through probably more than seven of those), and the Plum and Sakura Blossom is to die for.  Although, almost literally because of aluminum.

Because of this aluminum issue, I've been trying to find more natural alternatives.

A simple collection of lip products

As far as makeup goes, and most things in life for that matter, the more you own, the more owns you.
Lip products and I have always had a strange history (although not really, because they're inanimate objects, and when it comes down to it they're just colors in plastic tubes); I always go to a point of minimalism with them, then to a point of excess.

I was really excited to try out all of these Edward Bess lip products for work. I mean, just look at the packaging. It's gorgeous.

Inside my Trish McEvoy Makeup Planner

Nosy person I am, I love having a look through people's makeup bags. I'm pretty sure a lot of you feel the same, so I thought I'd share mine. I managed to condense all the makeup I could possibly need during my time abroad into my Trish McEvoy makeup planner (my mom's old one, since she upgraded to the bigger size), although I could fit my whole "collection" in it if I wanted to.

Haul: Caudalie, Yves Rocher, Kiko (with ingredients lists)

When I was going to get my shoes reheeled last week, I stopped in a pharmacy. I did so to ask for directions, because Seville is basically a labyrinth, and you get lost very easily, but of course I ended up picking up a couple things I needed anyway. My favorite French pharmacy brand, Caudalie, had some kind of discount, so I picked up the Vinosource Moisture Recovery Cream, and the Pulpe Vitaminée Eye and Lip Cream. I've been using them for about a month now, and I love them! They both smell divine, as most Caudalie products do, and they are so incredibly hydrating. The eye cream is lightweight, but it packs a punch on the moisture front, while really targeting all eye problems. The moisturizer smells herbally and is so hydrating. It's too heavy for day use for those with oily skin like me, but I use it at night, and have really been loving it. With both products, a little goes a long way.

Perfume Tag

1. What was your first perfume you ever purchased?
I forget actually. I think I probably got some random perfumes from people as presents that were more kid-y. But I remember having this perfume with a frosted glass pottle and a green lid

Silicone Hair Products: Yes? No?

For some reason, silicone has become this horrible ingredient to have in hair products. Quite honestly, I have no clue why.

Nail love: Keeping it natural

I need to start this post off by saying that I LOVE nail polish. I am the kind of gal that usually always has a perfect manicure, repainting at the first sign of a chip. I could paint my nails all day if I had the time to.

Hair bits from Goody

If you remember the review I did for Influenster of Goody's (horrible) Quick Dry Brush thing a while back (not paid, obvs, just given the brush to try out), as a result I somehow won the Goody contest and got a little care package. They gave me these Double Wear hair bands and the Ouchless Ribbon Elastics.

Finished (Empties): Nuxe Body Gel Douche Fondant, La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo, Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet, and Phyto 9

I love seeing reviews of products after people have finished them. It just gives a better picture of how the reviewer like them. Would they get it again? Or is it really not worth it?
I finished up a few things a while ago, so here's what I've been thinking about since they've gone away...

Would You Rather - Makeup Edition

I'm a big fan of tags, so I thought I'd do this one. Sounded fun! Everyone is tagged, Leave your response down in the comments below!

1. Would you rather lose all of your mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks, and lip glosses or lose all of your palettes and eyeshadows?
Lose all of my mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks, and lip glosses. I only have one mascara, I don't use liner, so I don't have any (I use shadow and transformer fluid with an angled brush :P ), I only have one lipstick, I don't own any lip gloss because I hate it, so that leaves my z-palette and my Trish palettes that have all my other shadows and blushes. That would be much more expensive to replace rather than one mascara and a lipstick.
2. Would you rather chop off all your hair or never be able to cut it again?
Never cut it again. You're talking to a girl who has donated hair to Locks of Love twice. I'm definitely used to never cutting it. I think the last time I cut my hair was over a year ago (yes, I know you should cut it regularly, it makes it look longer, etc.). I could just never see myself without my full head of hair.
3. Would you rather have a coral cheek or a pink cheek?
Probably pink. There are so many shades of it, that a pink cheek can go with everything depending what pink you choose. Coral I would find hard to pair with berry lips, for example, whereas a neutral-y pink would go every way.
4. If you had $1,000 to spend, would you rather buy clothes or makeup?
Hard one. I would say clothes since I couldn't imagine ever needing or being able to use 1,000 bucks worth of makeup. However, if we're throwing skincare into the mix, I might have to reevaluate this question.
5. Would you rather apply lipstick as eyeliner or eyeliner as lipstick?
Eyeliner as lipstick. You could get red/pink/coral liner, and that would last longer on the lips then black lipstick would as liner on the eyes.
6. Would you rather only shop at MAC or Sephora?
Sephora, considering I've never bought anything from MAC before, and quite honestly after swatching my way through the whole counter and leaving thoroughly unimpressed by the formulations, I think MAC is quite overrated compared to my favorite Sephora or drugstore brands. *Don't shoot me.* Plus with Sephora you get way more brands of makeup and skincare. MAC just gives you one.
7. Would you rather only use one eyeshadow color or one lip color for the rest of your life?
I could honestly deal with both considering I wear Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze and Nuxe Rêve de Miel almost everyday anyway. However, I would say just one lip color. I'd wear a neutral or just a balm, and everything would match the rest of my makeup anyway. If I get bored, I love playing with different eyeshadow combinations.
8. Would you rather wear winter clothes in the summer or summer clothes in the winter?
Where I'm from, if I wore summer clothes in the winter, I'd be hospitalized for frost bite. So winter clothes in summer (and I'd be hanging out in ALL the places with air conditioning). Also, I just like winter fashion better.
9. Would you rather have dark nails or bright nails all year round?
Bright. Whereas dark nails look out of place in the summer, brights look fine all year round. Plus, I love seeing bright colors on my toes in the winter. It makes me so happy. This is a hard one though, considering most of my favorite polishes are fall/winter colors. :/
10. Would you rather give up your favorite lip product or your favorite eye product?
Favorite eye product. I just feel like there are more good eye products to discover than lip products. If I gave up my favorite mascara or shadow, there's probably something to replace it. I feel like my favorite lip product is so unique and hydrating, that nothing is just as good, and my lips might get all nasty as a result.
11. Would you rather only be able to wear your hair in a ponytail or a messy bun?
Ponytail, considering my hair has all these weird flyaways and curls at any random point that look weird in a bun. I only wear buns on good hair days, which is not everyday.
12. Would you rather never be able to paint your nails again or never use lip gloss?
Never use lipgloss. Not only do I just love my nail polish, but I also just hate lipgloss. Easy one.
13. Would you rather shave your eyebrows and have none at all or Sharpie them in everyday?
Sharpie. I would use a lighter color and very finely pointed one, however. :P Eyebrows are just too important to the overall structure of your face to skip out on. Can you believe people used to pluck out all of their brows during the Renaissance because they thought it looked nice?
14. Would you rather live without makeup or nail polish?
Without polish. I love my nail polish, but my nails are stronger without it. I also just love putting on makeup everyday and playing with different looks.

Review: Egyptian Magic - A Magical Cream?

I had seen Egyptian Magic in a few magazines before chosen by celebrities as their secret weapon or whatever. So when I saw a 4oz + 2oz for 30 value pack at my Costco, I got a little bit excited...

Emptied and Replaced #2 (If empties, reviews, shop the stash, and a haul had a baby...)

Emptied: Vichy Normaderm 3 in 1 Cleanser
Replaced: Clean and Clear 3 in 1 Daily Cleanser

I recently ran out of my beloved Vichy Normaderm 3 in 1 Cleanser, and I replaced it with this Clean in Clean 3 in 1 (which is really just a 1). The Vichy Normaderm is incredibly difficult to find here in Spain, and when I do happen to see it or someone can order it for me, it's super expensive compared to buying it in France. Instead of paying a billion dollars to replace it, I found the Clean and Clear 3 in 1 at a supermarket.

Review: La Roche Posay Serozinc

A Caroline Hirons inspired purchase, I picked up La Roche Posay Serozinc the minute I saw it at a pharmacy in France.

Emptied and Replaced

Emptied: Trish McEvoy Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 15 in Natural
Replaced: Deborah Milano Cipria Ultrafine Shade 2
This is my second Trish McEvoy Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 15 I've gone through. I love the stuff, and I'm so sad it's gone. It gives great coverage, absorbs oil well, and sets my concealer in place perfectly. However, for now, I've found an okay replacement in the Deborah Milano Cipria powder. It does a great job of absorbing oil and setting makeup, although it does so with less coverage. It also has a weird granny-ish scent, so if you have fragrance-sensitive skin, watch out.

Review: Trish McEvoy Lash Curling Mascara - aka Best Mascara Ever

If you've never heard me rave about this mascara before, you've probably never talked to me about makeup. I have an obsession with this stuff. I've probably mentioned it in many blog posts as it's my favorite mascara of all time.

Lush Skincare: The best and what you should avoid spending your money on

I remember my Lush phase. I would spend hours looking at reviews, hauls, and new products online. I think it was my goal to try basically everything they had to offer. I love most of the products I tried, and I think Lush is a truly great brand. Although none of their products are currently a part of my routine, as they are expensive, I don't have a bath tub, and I've since wanted to try other things, I thought I'd give you my opinions on their products in case some of you are wanting to try out some things.

Although I do think Lush is amazing, the products that I had the most trouble getting into were from their skincare line. However, if you look in the right directions, they do have some absolute gems. These are the three that are worth your money:

Nail love: Deborah Lippmann Ray of Light*

One of the most beautiful and captivating nail polishes I own, Deborah Lippmann's Ray of Light is the perfect nail polish for this fall.

It has flecks of glitter that change between green and copper

5 skincare problems, their causes, their treatments

Problem: Under the skin, cystic, and hormonal zits
Cause: Usually hormones. Under the skin spots usually tend to pop up around the chin and jawline at
"that time of the month" because androgren levels are at their highest (and we're eating really badly). This makes your skin oilier and not able to slough off skin fast enough, resulting in a hard pimple that takes forever to go away.
Treatment: Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion and Lush Grease Lightening.
Don't squeeze these zits. It won't do anything but make the spot worse and maybe even scar. The Buffering Lotion shrinks these zits significantly and either makes it disappear or come to a pop-able whitehead. If you catch the spot early enough, it'll keep it from coming up altogether. Careful though, because it can be drying.
Grease Lightning doesn't too much to shrink a spot like this that has already popped up, but it takes away the pain and redness almost instantly.

Nail love: Butter London Shambolic

I picked Butter London's Shambolic up in a holiday set of three polishes, and I do have to say it wasn't my favorite of the bunch (only because I don't like pink). There were two other colors, Jack the Lad (more on that later) and Scuppered, with which I fell absolutely in love. However, like all Butter polishes, I do think Shambolic is really unique.

Review: Shiseido Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector Broad Spectrum SPF 43

I'm a big fan of sunscreen. It's one of the best things you can do for your future skin, as it prevents sun damage, our biggest ager.

Review: Eve Lom Cleanser*

Before I start this review, I think I need to get one thing out of the way. The Eve Lom Cleanser is a pretty controversial product, mainly because it contains mineral oil.

Review: Natura Bissé Oxygen Mousse*, Gel*, and NB Ceutical Eye Recovery Balm*

If you're familiar with Natura Bissé, you'll know that it's not a cheap brand. However, you'll also know that it's the top when it comes to skincare.  Natura Bissé is a Spanish medical grade brand that cranks out highly effective skincare without the fillers. I was extremely lucky to try out some things for work, and am happy to give a good report.

Review (Rave): Tata Harper Skincare*

At my work we carry a lot of interesting lines, and we get to try the products, too. One of the most unique lines, and my all time favorite skincare brand (I think you can tell where this review is going already) is Tata Harper.

Tata Harper is a completely natural brand based out of Vermont designed for all of you luxurious hippies out there that want to treat your skin while protecting your health and the environment. I have tried everything from the line (minus their three newer serums) and am happy to report that there are no duds.

September Top 10

It's been a while since I've done any kind of favorites, but I've been loving a few things recently, so I thought I'd keep you updated. I picked out ten things that have been popping up a ton this month, and I highly recommend all of them. If you're in the market for something new, definitely check them out.

I have probably raved about Trish McEvoy Finish Line many a time. However, it's never gotten its own review from me before, so here it is now.

Finished: Essie Mint Candy Apple

It's pretty rare, I think, to finish a nail polish, but I finally finished my bottle of Essie Mint Candy Apple. To be fair, I only got down to the last 1/5 of the bottle before it got so gloopy it wasn't even usable, but I'd say that's still finished right?

My last French pharmacy haul (for now, obviously)

I never had time to post this one when I was in France, but I was digging through my photos and found these, so I thought I'd tell you how I spent my money for my last days in Grenoble.

I got a bunch of travel stuff, since I was going backpacking. I love travel sets because they give you the best of the brands for a good price in just-trying-out sizes.

Simple everyday makeup - 7 product face

There are days when I'm all for spending a billion years doing my makeup, but as school has almost fully kicked into swing, I've gotten slightly (a lot) lazier. On lazy days (everyday) I just stick to the essentials.

Finished (empties): Trish McEvoy Eye Serum (sample), Mitchum Advanced Control Deodorant, Ojon Damage Reverse Serum, Natura Bisse Oxygen Gel, Fresh Sugar Rose lip balm reviews

1. I finished up a deluxe sample of the Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Eye Serum. It's really good stuff, actually. It doesn't feel like it does anything because it has such a water-like consistency, but it does help moisturize the eyes, reduce puffiness and circles, and surprisingly make eyelashes grow faster and look really good.

Little Spanish Haul

When I came to Spain from France, it was just after traveling, so I basically ran out of everything, and I was working on my travel size things. So I went to El Corte Inglés, think Macy's but with a grocery store and a CVS in it, to stock up on stuff.

Saturday, September 21, 2013

Finished (empties): Avène Extremely Gentle Cleansing Lotion, Klorane Papyrus Shampoo and Conditioner, Caudalie Thé des vignes shower gel

I finished up this cleanser at the end of August. Not my favorite. I like to be able to rinse off my cleansers, and this was no-rinse. I just felt like it never got my makeup off, never

Review: Blinc Mascara

I love tubular mascaras. My favorite mascaras of all time are the Trish McEvoy Volumizing and Curling mascaras. So I was pretty excited when I got this deluxe sample of the Blinc one.

Deborah Lippmann's Spring 2013* polishes - a bit late...

I've had these photos for a while, and I know I'm way too late to post these, but I thought I'd share anyway just in case you've still seen these polishes around and want to pick them up, because they are still available at some stores and online.

Review: Marvis Toothpaste

I have raved on and on about Marvis toothpaste in videos, and that's because it is the best toothpaste ever. I finished my fourth tube (of two large sizes, two travel) recently, and then I realized that this stuff has never gotten its own review from me. Then I got sad, then got to writing.

All about hyperpigmentation and how to get rid of it (dark spots)

So you get a zit, right?

Depending on your skin tone, not only will you have that zit, but after it goes away, you'll have another spot. This spot won't take days to go away though. It'll take months.

What is that spot?

In skin terms, spots left behind by zits are post inflammation hyperpigmentation. Basically the long way of saying f**k my life.

How and why do they happen?

Skincare for Men

I think I’ve always placed guys on a pedestal. They’re very attractive to me, so I don’t even care what’s on their faces most of the time. However, I do have some come to me for skincare advice (shyly at first, because some people think skincare is for women only, which is not true), because believe it or not, they do actually care.

Current Skincare Routine

As most of anyone reading this will know, I’m studying abroad for a whole year in Europe. However, between my summer and fall programs, I’ve had a bit of time to go traveling. I’ve been backpacking, so I’ve had to pack extremely light in order to not be weighed down. Nevertheless, I’m still a huge beauty addict, and it would be too difficult to not pack my skincare essentials. I’ve gotten my summer routine down to what I think is necessary and effective. I have oily skin, and this has been helping me keep my skin clear and my oil under control.

Makeup Products I would Repurchase (and Products I would try out)

I like to try new things. Who doesn't? However, there are some staples I keep going back to that I know work for me.

As I was packing for France, I kind of got to thinking... What if I lost my luggage (and therefore all of my makeup, save my Z-Palette I have at home with my not as easily wearable eyeshadows) and had to start from scratch? What would I buy to replenish?

Review: Klorane Hair Products (Mango + Papyrus)

I think my fascination with the whole Klorane brand began when I visited Paris when I was thirteen. It was in every single pharmacy (still is), and I think I just began to associate it with France.

The first things I've ever tried from Klorane were the Mango Butter shampoo and conditioner.

This was my first purchase I made in Grenoble. For some reason, I just really felt like wearing a red lip, so I popped into Sephora and picked this baby up.

French Pharmacy Haul #3

So you know when you go into a store for one really small thing and end up leaving with way more than you intended? That's what happened here. I needed to go to the pharmacy because I ran out of my shower gel, but I ended up walking out with a whole lot of things. I'll just start with the shower gel because it's what I actually went in for.

I got the Caudalie Thé Des Vignes scent this time, as I've already used Fleur de Vigne and Pêche de Vigne. Gotta change it up right? The scent's a little bit deeper than the two mentioned above, and it's just kind of warm and cozy. I really like it, and I have my eye on the perfume...
