Favorite Skincare of 2013

Skincare is a little baby of mine, and I've discovered so many incredible products this past year. This was incredibly hard list to make. However, I filtered through all my posts, and out of everything I've tried this year, these are the products that I would choose if someone told me I could only use one product from every category mentioned below ever again. So here goes.

Cleanser was a very tough one for me this year.  I've tried so many good ones, (like the Eve Lom cleansing balm and the Fresh Soy Cleanser, which I absolutely love) but I feel that the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser is just the one that does it all in the end. I'll massage a couple pumps of this onto my dry face lightly to remove makeup (even more gently around the eyes) at night, rinse, then massage another couple pumps onto my wet skin as my second cleanse.  I'll just do another couple pumps in the morning on wet skin, but instead of rinsing, I'll leave this on for five minutes to dry as a mask while I brush my teeth. I'll then rinse off and have perfectly soft supple skin before applying makeup. This cleanser is such a multitasker since it's a makeup remover, exfoliator, and a mask. It also smells incredible, is good for the environment, and is gentle (I usually don't like physical exfoliants as I find that they scratch the skin, but this one has round particles that won't create microtears and spread bacteria). The salicylic acid also keeps blemishes at bay. Everyone I recommend this to absolutely loves it, and it's a cleanser I really miss when I don't have it.
The Mario Badescu Glycolic Toner was actually something I was a bit on the fence on at first. When I first used it, I kind of found it drying and irritating. However, once mixed with my hydrating toners to dilute it (you can use anyone you like), it became the perfect exfoliating toner, gentle enough for me to use twice a day. It does keep the skin clear and it gets rid of all the dead stuff.
This is hands down the best eye treatment I have ever used. It's more of gel, but it still keeps the eyes hydrated, never greasy, and I actually saw results with this, as it dimished all my fine lines, puffiness, and under eye circles. It's expensive, but a little goes a very long way. It's incredible, and I'll leave it at that.
I used the Mario Bacesdcu Vitamin C serum all year, and I absolutely loved every drop of it. I found that it made the skin nice and clear, and it really helped with dark spots and hydration. It just works for all of my skin problems.
I think Tata Harper has just won my favorite skincare brand in general prize this year, as I love every single one of her products, but her moisturizers really come out on top. The Rebuilding Moisturizer is the best moisturizer I have ever used in my life. It has a matte finish, which as an oily skinned gal I greatly appreciate, but it still is so incredibly hydrating. I used it in the morning under sunscreen, and I used it at night with the Replenishing Nutrient Complex pressed over the top for an extra hydrating boost and, if I even had any with the Tata skincare regime, to sooth any blemishes or rough patches. This combo just leaves your skin absolutely glowing, and I can't recommend it more highly.
Best mask ever, hands down. If there's one thing you need from this whole post, it's this mask. I've used the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask, and I can tell you for sure that this mask is one hundred times better. You need the tiniest bit to cover your face, and by the time it takes you to watch an episode of How I Met Your Mother, you will have a glowing complexion with diminished dark spots and reduced blemishes. It. Is. Amazing. Instead of AHAs, this mask uses enzymes and BHA to get rid of any dead skin and clean out blocked pores (AHA only gets the surface layer, not into the pore). It's not irritating at all (I know this because I have accidentally fallen asleep with it on and woken up with no problems, just amazing skin), it has a light plant-y smell from all the natural goodness in it, so the smell was never a problem for me, it's not drying because of its super powered hyaluronic acid that Tata gets specially from Egypt, and it's another one of those multitaskers. Not only do I use this as a mask, but I use it as a spot treatment to get rid of any blemish over 1-2 days and as a cleanser booster if I need to make a regular cleanser into an exfoliating one. My mom and dad are also obsessed with this (we have Tata Harper mask sessions as a family), and I got the lovely Jessica Beautician hooked on this, too. Try it and thank me later.
This is another hero product I discovered this year. The Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion is the only thing I've tried (aside from the Darphin Skin Mat Masque) that gets rid of those under the skin cystic blemishes. If you put this on a hard zit as soon as you notice it coming up, it will completely block it. If that blemish is already there, this will bring it to a pop-able whitehead. It can be a little drying, but after you've battled your blemish, you can stick the Replenishing Nutrient Complex from Tata Harper over the top, and all will be well again.
I love me a good and high SPF, but without a greasy white cast, that can be hard to find. However, I found that my favorite sunscreen this year was the Shiseido Urban Environment. This acted as a tinted moisturizer for me, as it does have that slight amount of coverage and hydration, but it wasn't at all greasy or streaky like other sunscreens with a similar SPF.

So here you go, some of my top favorites not only of 2013, but of all time. Hope that was helpful!

I linked to posts where I go more into depth about the products. A lot of those have links to the products or info where to get them.  ;)

My Favorite Makeup of 2013

I'm quite minimalist when it comes to makeup. I truly believe that the better you take care of your skin, the less makeup you'll have to wear. I also will usually completely use a product before going out to buy another one, so that's why I don't have too many makeup bits to share with you guys. However, there have been things that I've tried this year that have truly stood out to me and became absolute staples in my everyday routine. If there's something in a certain category that I haven't mentioned, most likely it's not something I use on a regular basis or I haven't found anything particularly amazing. If I've done a full review, I'll try to link those throughout the post.

Concealer: theBalm Time Balm Concealer
I usually go straight from my sunscreen to concealer (unless I have some kind of primer under it). I don't use a liquid foundation because I don't think I really need it, and I use a powder foundation on top anyway. This little pot of concealer (I shouldn't say little because it's a fair amount of product and a little of it goes a very long way) covers absolutely everything flawlessly. I think it works best blended and patted in with the fingers. It covers anything from blemishes to under-eye circles, lasts all day, and doesn't look cakey. You should, however, make sure the skin is properly moisturized first before putting it under the eyes and over any dry patches. This is incredible. I'm on my second one now, even though my first one wasn't completely used up due to an unfortunate accident involving a toilet seat that was left up. I think you can guess what happened next.

Powder: Trish McEvoy Even Skin Mineral SPF 15
This is easily the best powder I have ever used. It has really amazing coverage for a powder foundation, and it just completely evens out the skin without making it look cakey. It also absorbs oil like a dream and just looks like skin, and it doesn't settle into fine lines. Love love love.

Blush: Trish McEvoy Natural and Easy Going and Sonia Kashuk Melon
These are the only blushes I wore all year. Trish Natural has become my everyday go-to, and it really does just look like a natural glow from within. Easy Going is my truly easy going blush. I can pair it with absolutely everything from red to berry to pink to coral lips. It's perfection. Melon is an incredibly pigmented peachy pink blush. A little truly goes a long way. I also just love these kind of shades because I find that they look the most natural on me.

I bought these in the fall of 2012 and have been using mostly these shadows ever since. The Maybelline Color Tattoos are actually kind of hit and miss for me in consistency, but the shade Bad to the Bronze is a huge, huge hit. I'll slap this baby on at 6am and it will still look perfect when I remove my makeup at 11 pm. It's also just super fast to use, because once you have this on you don't need anything else in the crease, and you don't even need liner because it's just that multidimensional. I've used up most of my little pot, and it's still not even dried out. The Comfort Zone palette from Wet n Wild is another thing I've used constantly is year. I just find it has everything I could need for an eye look, and I absolutely love every single color, even the greens. The pigmentation and blendability of these shadows are also spot on, and they last a good while on the lids, even without primer. It's also under 5 bucks. Bam.

I've done a full review on this, so I'll spare you a long rant about how much I love this magical potion that will turn anything into eyeliner.

Again, I've raved about these mascaras so much I don't know if I need to go in depth, but I just love the look these give me, all with the most incredible formula.

Brushes: Trish McEvoy
I've just been completely wowed by Trish McEvoy as a whole this year, but her brushes are particularly amazing. Trish actually got her makeup line started with her brushes. She would cut her brushes herself, and then all of her other makeup artist friends started asking for them, and voila! You have the whole shebang. I've been using her brushes constantly this past year, and after touching my face with these babies, nothing else compares. The powder brush is a favorite of mine, as I find it packs on powder in two seconds with full coverage. It's super soft, too. The bronzer brush is also amazing. The shape is perfect for contouring around the cheekbones, jaw, and forehead, and it just blends everything to perfection. My only gripe with the two brushes mentioned above is that they are expensive and have a slight tendency to shed hairs and glue, but really the fact that they just do all the work for you is worth it. The rest of the brushes I use from Trish don't have a shedding problem! however. One of my favorite brushes to use ever is the 48 blending. It's the best brush I have ever used for blush. It picks up the perfect amount of product, and since it's small it puts it in all the right places and just blends your blush out for you perfectly. I love it so much I could write a poem about it. I also love the Trish medium lay down for my shadow, because again, it just picks up the right amount of product. The crease brush is also a loved one because it fits perfectly into my little crease and blends everything out into perfection. The precision smudge is also perfect for under the eye or to smoke out any dark liner on the upper lash line, and the angled liner brush is the best one I have ever used to get that perfect cat flick, as the bristles are stiff, but still flexible. Another star brush is the eyebrow brush. It is the most amazing brush ever for putting powder shadow into the brows and blending it to natural perfection. Perfect brows? Yes, please.

I know this is a makeup post, but I can't do a yearly favorites without mentioning this perfect bag that I've been using all year. Another star product from Trish McEvoy that has made her line so unique from the rest is the Trish planner. This is Franklin Covey for your makeup right here. I've depotted basically all my eyeshadows to fit into the magnetic pages (like mirrored z-palettes that you can put in a binder), and all my Trish products fit cozily in there, since her makeup is made for the pages. This saves a ton of packaging, by the way, for those of you who love to be environmentally friendly or just chic and sleek. The binder also has slots for brushes and tubed products and a handy pull-out mesh makeup bag that I use all the time for flights. I freaking love this makeup bag and don't know how I lived without it for so long. You need this!!!

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed raving about the products I've been using all year, and I'll see you soon for skincare, body, hair, and fragrance! Because better late than never.... :)

Top 5 Favorite Winter Polishes

I should've probably gotten this up around holiday season, because these are some pretty festive looking nail paints, but I didn't because family, study abroad, dogs, Netflix, etc. But they're here now and still wintery!

One of the only nail polishes from Essie that I actually like, if not the only one (because it applies somewhat nicely and doesn't chip after two seconds), Wicked is a very very dark red wine color that I think is perfect for this time of year when it starts to get dark at five o'clock. It fits into many seasons, mostly fall and winter, although I do use it as my night out polish pretty much any time. It also looks great layered under gold glitter.

Chanel's Peridot is one of my all time favorite polishes for anytime, but I do especially love it around this time of year. It's a gold to green duochrome, and every time I wear it I get bunches of comments and compliments, even from guys. Yes, I know you can't get it now, but there are tons of dupes. One I like even better actually is Deborah Lippmann's Swagga Like Us. I like Swagga Like Us better than Peridot for three reasons: 1) It applies way better and lasts way longer, 2) the duochrome in Swagga is more drastic and has more dimension, and the gold is more deep and coppery 3) It's cheaper and available. Can't forget available.

I like this gold polish from Urban Outfitters. I don't know if you can find it there anymore, but the idea is there. I just like gold polish for winter. This one is opaque in one coat and has a silvery undertone. It chips kind of fast though.

Butter London's Jack the Lad is one of my all time favorite polishes. It just has so much dimension, and like all the Butter polishes, the formula is to die for. I've raved about this enough though, so I'll stop that here.

Another favorite polish of mine, Butter London's Scuppered is just perfect for winter (and Fall for that matter). It's the most beautiful copper with different color glitters that give it its multi-dimensional look. Love.

What are you winter polish recommendations?

Review: Bourjois Volume Clubbing Ultra Black Mascara

What's cool about high end makeup is that for the most part, there is always a dupe. Certain luxury brands are owned by larger companies, and they share factories and everything. This means that lots of products end up being the same between brands. For example, YSL, Armani, Maybelline, etc are owned by L'Oréal. This is great, because say you love a lip gloss from YSL but it's really expensive. You'll probably be able to find that same lip gloss at the drugstore but under the L'Oréal Paris brand.
This is also true for Boujois and Chanel. Bourjois owns Chanel, so some times the products are the same, just cheaper if you get them from Bourjois.

Knowing this, when I was in Spain and in need of a mascara, I looked for one from Bourjois, because chances were that their mascaras were Chanel quality without the price (although ALL mascara is expensive in Europe, don't know why). Bourjois Volume Clubbing Ultra Black Mascara was 15 euro, but still cheaper than a high end mascara in Europe.

What attracted me to the mascara were the claims about how long lasting it is. It was supposedly tested by clubbers to make sure it could last a whole night of sweat and steam. It's also supposed to be very volumizing and black.

First thing I noticed when I applied it was that it was wet, although on the drier end of the wet mascara spectrum, if that makes sense. I'm not the biggest wet mascara person, because I just find them quite hard to work with, and with the exception of the Trish McEvoy mascaras, they don't build up as well as drier formula mascaras. This formula actually really reminded me of the Lancôme Hypnose Drama mascara.

The brush is also super big and kind of difficult to work with. I prefer normal to smaller brushes so that I can get into every lash and get my lower lashes fuss-free. Also like the Lancôme Hypnose Drama, the brush isn't uniform all the way around (although this isn't squiggly like the Lancôme). Two sides of the brush have a reservoir on it to get a bunch of product on the brush (a lot of volumizing mascaras have this), and the other two have the fiber bristles (not enough of them in my opinion). This resulted in a pretty unseparated, borderline clumpy, first application due to all the product on the brush. That did get better once the mascara started to dry out though, and after a while it wasn't clumpy anymore. Another thing that bothered me about the mascara was that when you pulled it out of the tube, there was a ton of product left on the tip of the brush. This got messy at times. In general, I don't feel like the mascara brush really gripped my lashes, either.

Ignore my brows, please. This photo doesn't look all that bad, but keep in mind that this was taken after I used the mascara for the last time before throwing away the tube. It did get some good volume, but I've used better, cheaper mascaras that do the same thing (Covergirl Lashblast Fusion, Maybelline Full n Soft, etc). The tube of mascara itself really didn't last me a long time at all. I can use the Trish McEvoy mascara, or other drugstore mascaras for that matter, for three or four months before they're dried out/used up and ready to toss. This lasted me only about two months, if not less.

The real problems, however, lie in the wearing power, which is unfortunate for something that claims to be so long lasting that all the club-goers choose it. I found that at the end of the day it would smudge under the eyes, no matter how much I powdered there, and it would also flake off. Not cool. It also isn't the blackest mascara I've ever used (the Trish McEvoy ones are). It was also a real pain in the ass to remove, resulting in lost lashes. Thanks.

All in all, if this could possibly reflect Chanel mascara quality, you're better off giving those a pass, too. This stuff just wasn't for me, and it was way too expensive for a drugstore brand.

If you're going to splash out on a mascara, try the Trish McEvoy tubular ones.

Donating to Locks of Love

If there's one thing I really never get around to doing it's getting a haircut. I probably can go more than a year without cutting my hair (yes, I know you shouldn't do that). My hair tends to get really long at times (down to my butt) before I just chop it all off at once, and towards the end, I end up not cutting it on purpose so I can give it to Locks of Love:

"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need."

This is my second donation to Locks of Love, my first time being when I was in eighth grade. I just think it's a great organization.

It's really easy to donate. I just walked into Great Clips ($10 hair cut, holla!) had the hair dresser braid my hair, measure the braid with a ruler (I donated 11.5 inches this time, but the minimum is 10), and chop. Then I put it in a ziplock bag and mailed it in. Now, if you've gone a really long time between cuts like I did, you'll have to get a little trim to get the dead ends off first. Locks of Love can't use hair that's too damaged (including colored/bleached hair, etc).
Here are their specific instructions for donation and their address:
  • 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
  • Hair must be in a ponytail or braid before it is cut.
  • Hair must be clean and completely dry before it is mailed in.
  • Place the ponytail or braid inside of a plastic bag, and then inside of a padded envelope.
  • If you wish to receive an acknowledgment for your hair donation, please fill out the hair donation form, or write your name and e-mail address or mailing address on a full size separate sheet of paper and include inside the envelope. We cannot acknowledge donors who do not send their name and address according to these instructions.
  • All hair donations must be mailed to Locks of Love at:

    234 Southern Blvd.
    West Palm Beach, FL 33405-2701
  • **IMPORTANT** When mailing your donation, please make sure that you are sending it with adequate postage. The U.S. Postal Service has notified Locks of Love that many donations are being sent without enough postage, and these packages will be returned to sender! To ensure adequate postage, please take your donation to your local post office.
  • For more info: http://www.locksoflove.org/donate.html
If your hair is at your butt like mine was and you haven't heard of Locks of Love, I really hope you think about them next time you get a haircut!

Nail love: Chanel Black Pearl

I have two Chanel nail polishes in my collection (Peridot, an all time favorite, and this one). Both gifts. Truth is, as expensive as they are, the formula really sucks. The wear time and application of Chanel polishes are not really that great compared to Deborah Lippmann polishes or Butter London which are still cheaper and have amazing colors.
However, I do love this color. It really is like a black pearl, with a dark grey base and a green shimmer to it.
What do you think of high end polishes? Worth the price? No?

Empties

I've finished up a lot of stuff as of late, or at least I've collected a lot of used up products without writing about them, so I'm just going to jump right in. This is going to be a long post.

I finished up this huge 16 oz bottle of the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner. I think this stuff really does do the job at exfoliating, so be careful. If I used this twice a day undiluted (with my Clarisonic), I found this to be irritating. I ended up diluting it with a hydrating toner, and after that this stuff was awesome, still exfoliating, yet non-drying and irritating. If you don't use a Clarisonic, I do think you could get away with this without diluting it, whether it's once or twice a day. I think I would repurchase this, as it did do a good job.

I finished up the Caudalie Body Lotion I got at a pharmacie in Grenoble. I love this stuff. It's so hydrating, but it sinks in really well and feels light. The scent is slightly more on the masculine side. I would repurchase this, but I do have some cheaper stuff that I like just as much that I'm going through right now. This is more of a treat.

Not the most glamorous body wash you can use, but this stuff does the job. I've found the Dove body washes to be very hydrating, and they all have a great lather. I would repurchase, maybe in a different scent, but only when I don't feel like trying anything new. This is more of an old stand-by product.

I finished up a bunch of deluxe samples of skincare.
I got through a bottle of Nuxellence Jeunesse from Nuxe. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what this is for. It's not hydrating enough to be a moisturizer (maybe a light weight moisturizer to use under sunscreen in the morning, but it's not better than any other moisturizers for the a.m.) and it doesn't have any effect to be called a serum. It's just kind of blah and not a product to repurchase.
I finished two minitubes of Vichy Normaderm Anti-Age, which again, doesn't really do much. It has a lot of fragrance and denatured alcohol, so it's not really something I enjoyed putting on my face, and it didn't have much of an effect as far as oil production and blemishes go. Not one to purchase.
I also finished the Avène Soothing Hydrating Mask. This actually gets a lot of hype, not sure why. It feels like a lightweight moisturizer that you rinse off. It's definitely not the best thing I've used when my skin felt dehydrated. It does nothing basically. No repurchase here.
On a more positive note, I finished a deluxe sample of the Garancia Diabolique Tomate Water Cream / Crème d'Eau and absolutely loved it. It's lightweight, sinks in and hydrates, makes your skin look and feel healthy, and I felt like it helped control oil. It smells great, too. I would definitely get the full size.

I finished up the Clean and Clear 3 in 1 Facial Cleanser. I got this stuff when I ran out of the Vichy Normaderm 3 in 1 because the formulas and ingredients sounded pretty similar (although this one lacks exfoliating particles). I do think the Vichy is ultimately better (although I do like the scent of the Clean and Clear more), but if you can't get your hands on that, this works, too. I did find this to be very drying, so make sure you moisturize properly after cleansing. I would repurchase, but only if I couldn't find the Vichy Normaderm 3 in 1 at a good price.

I went through another set of the L'Oréal Everliso / EverSleek in the US shampoo and conditioner. I keep repurchasing this stuff because it's a pretty good deal for sulphate free hair care formulas. It doesn't have silicone, which is more of a minus than a plus for me, but if you care about that, this is a line to look at. It's not nearly as good for my thick and frizzy hair as the Free Your Mane haircare line, but it is a third of the price. I did repurchase them again, and I'm almost all the way through those ones, too. I left those almost finished bottles in the US, and I'm now using the Oribe Moisture and Control shampoo and conditioner (which are good, but not 37 bucks good) and have the L'Oréal EverCrème range lined up. L'Oréal hair care gets a big thumbs up from me.

I don't know if I can count this as an empty, but my pot of Bold Gold 24 hour Color Tattoo from Maybelline dried up on me (and I had used most of it anyway, the glass jar being way more than just visible) so I thought it was time. I know the whole microwave trick thing, but this wasn't really worth the stinking up of my host family's microwave. It was dryish when I first bought it anyway, and the formula was no where near as good as Bad to the Bronze. Plus, it's not one of those "wear on its own" shades, which is the point of a cream shadow for me. For now it's not a repurchase, definitely not over a regular gold eyeshadow.

I made my way through the Deborah Milano Cipria UltraFine powder. It was good on the coverage front, but it wasn't nearly as flawless and natural in finish as the Trish McEvoy mineral powders, and it smelled like a grandma. The color was never right for me either, a bit too dark, and it could look cakey at times. Not to mention the mirror broke off from the rest of the packaging. It was a bit expensive, too. Not a repurchase.

I finished a floss. Standard. Boring. I would pick up another free one from my dentist's office. Heh heh.

I also finished up the Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum. I love this stuff. I find it does make a difference in skin discoloration. However, i do think the packaging is flawed. The dropper doesn't reach all the way to the end of the bottle, so you have to dump the product out once the dropper has stopped reaching it. Then after that, I had to stick my fingers into the bottle to scrape away the remainder of the product. I used up all I could reach, as you can see from the picture. I think this would be nicer in an air pump with a darker color packaging to protect the contents from degradation by UV exposure. Just a thought. Although I really liked this, I'm not going to run out and repurchase because of the packaging and the price. I got this for a very good deal, but if I were in the US, it would be pretty darn expensive.

I finished up the last of my L'Occitane hand creams, the Mango Flower one. I love this stuff. It smells beautiful, sinks in without being greasy, and is very hydrating and healing of course. I might definitely repurchase after my other hand creams are gone.

I finished up the Nuxe Rêve de Miel lip balm in the stick version. I won't be repurchasing. This was okay, but the one in the jar is a zillion times better. This one also isn't matte like the one in the jar. At the end, as with most stick balms, you have to stick your finger in and scrape out the remaining product.

Finished a hotel lotion. Cool.

I also finished a bottle of the L'Oréal Micellaire Water. It's supposed to be a dupe for Bioderma, which I have not tried. I'm really just over the whole micellaire thing, not that I really got into it anyway. No micellaire water is going to remove makeup as well as a proper cleanser would. This certainly didn't. I liked the smell (like coconut water), and it was nice to keep around for those days when you just really wanted to get the bulk of your makeup off and get into your sweat pants (or drunk nights when you're can't be bothered to do anything and just want to go to sleep). I would not repurchase though, and I don't think I'll be purchasing any micellaire water for that matter. They're the better version of wipes, which still are not good. I'll just be washing my face.

I didn't completely finish the Nuxe Bio Beauty deodorant, but it was not worth transporting to the US from Spain, so I ditched it. It worked well at first, but after a few weeks, the BO just came through. It also went on pretty wet and gooey and never really dried completely. Herbal-y smell, not for everyone, not for me. Not a repurchase.

Another almost finished but ditched product, this Jasmine oil, which funny story, was not actually perfume oil but air freshener oil. Turns out this university student can't read. Again, almost finished but I didn't feel like it was worth carrying an air freshener oil with me the US, especially if I shouldn't be using it on my skin anyway. I didn't have anything funky happen to me, but you can see why I wouldn't repurchase.

I also finished the Rimmel BB Cream. Many claims with this one. 9 in 1? Um sure. I felt like I got pretty greasy through the day with this, and depending on what's under it, it did not blend very well. It blended okay and had good coverage if used alone, nothing under. Not a repurchase. In fact, remind me to never buy another BB cream again. They've all been pretty disappointing so far, and I'd rather just do the whole sunscreen and concealer thing.

I almost finished the Garnier Ambre Soleil SPF 30 suncreen oil (which I put in a little bottle to take with me to Madrid (to use as a body lotion because it's also hydrating), where I ditched it because it's not worth carrying a little amount of liquid to the US from Spain). This stuff was great. It smelled like Jo Malone Vanilla and Anise cologne, it was hydrating, gave the skin a glow and no white cast, and I used it the whole summer. It has good and pretty protection. I would repurchase if I can find it cheaper than other sunscreen oils.

I didn't finish this natural deodorant that I got in a market in Spain. Not worth carrying back to the US. It didn't do anything, and it left white bits under the armpits. Lovely. Not a repurchase.

I finished the Bourjois Volume Clubbing Ultra Black mascara. Definitely would not repurchase. I didn't like this stuff at all. At the beginning, it was too wet and would clump lashes together and get all over the place because the brush was huge and awkward. It smudged. When it dried out towards the end, I couldn't get much volume out of it, and it flaked. If this is supposed to be similar to Chanel formulas (because Bourjois owns Chanel), I will never ever buy a Chanel mascara.

I also finished a tube of Sensodyne. This stuff is gross. I used Marvis toothpaste, which tastes like heaven, so going from that to this was like a slap in the face. Also, weird, but this stuff made my mouth shed. Yeah, dead bits of skin would roll off of the inside of my cheeks. This stopped when I switched back to my beloved Marvis. I would not repurchase this ever.

I also finished this Cleansing Milk from Yves Rocher. Not the best cleanser, as it didn't fully remove makeup. However, it did smell like a watermelon Jolly Rancher. Not a repurchase.

I finished the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder. This was hard to get through because I hated it. I used to love the Stay Matte powder, but then Rimmel went and reformulated it. The new formulation is cakey, has no coverage, and does not mattify my skin. Not a repurchase. P.S. the packaging stinks.

I finished the Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum, which I LOVE. This is very effective for both hyperpigmentation and acne. I love the ingredients list. It's hydrating, too. It goes yellow towards the end, but no big deal. That's just how vitamin c products age. I would buy this again if I could get it discounted on Hautelook like I did the first time I bought it.

Another deodorant (you guys must really think I have BO issues by now). The Dove Go Fresh deodorant in Cucumber and Green Tea is pretty standard and effective. I prefer the stick form, though. I don't know why roll on deodorants are such a huge thing in Europe. I already repurchased the same STICK formula deodorant, but I picked out two different scents that I prefer (Blue Fig and Orange Blossom and Plum and Sakura). The Dove ones are really hydrating, soothing, leave no white marks, and actually control BO.

My most recent empty is the Kiko Compact Powder. It has very decent coverage, and the color was perfect for me. However, it was pretty cakey and didn't mattify that well. Not a repurchase. Trish McEvoy wins the powder competition always.

Hope you enjoyed! I tried to make that as short as possible.

What have you finished up recently?

Btw, leave some mattifying powder recommendations down below if you'd like! I'd like. ;)

Haul and little review (Target, drugstore.com, Walmart, Sephora, Diptyque, French Pharmacy)

Before I left for study abroad round two, (after Spain, I am now back in France, Paris specifically, for another five months) I wanted to stock up on some things that I love from the States or things that would be much more expensive in France. I also got some stuff online for a good deal that I didn't necessarily need (or even bring with me) in France. But hey, it was the holidays, so some things were a little present to myself. I ended up doing some online shopping (from drugstore.com mainly, then Target, some Hautelook, and Sephora) but I went to Walmart last minute to get some things I might need. I also got a ton of vitamins and feminine products (which aren't shown here) because vitamins are hella expensive in Europe, and so are feminine products unfortunately.

Before I even left the country in June, I had ordered a couple perfumes from Diptyque when they went on Hautelook for a super discount. They got to my house after I left though, so I had to wait until I got back from Spain to sniff them for the first time. I have heard so much about Diptyque from the blogging world, so I was really curious. I made my purchases purely based off the notes, which is pretty risky, but I'm definitely really happy with them. Do Son is straight up tuberose, which I absolutely love. It's really similar to Nasomatto Narcotic Venus or Tocca Florence. Eau Duelle is a really complex one. It's pretty deep, and it does have vanilla. If you don't like vanilla, you don't have to be scared of this one. It's not cloying or anything, and the vanilla really doesn't come out as much. You get more of a cardamom, black tea, smoke kind of scent. I love both of these.

Real Techniques and Eco Tools brushes were on sale at drugstore.com (Real Techniques were only 10 bucks each pack instead of the normal 20), so I got the starter sets because I was pretty curious given all the hype in the blogging community. To be honest, I don't really think the Real Techniques ones are that worth the hype. I wouldn't make the purchase over again if I needed to. In the eye set, the brow and liner brushes are completely pointless, and in the face one, the foundation brush is just a waste of space. The other brushes are okay, but they're no where near Trish McEvoy quality. I do like the Eco Tools brushes I got, and out of all of them, there were only a few I wouldn't really use. I'll have to do a full brush review later though.

I also got some haircare from drugstore.com. I really like the EverSleek range from L'Oréal, but I really wanted to try the EverCrème one for even dryer hair. I also picked up some baby shampoo to deep clean my brushes. For the holidays, my mom got me the Oribe Moisture and Control shampoo and conditioner, which was super nice of her. I've tried them, and I do like them, but they're definitely not worth the price, and they're not as good as Free Your Mane which is more than half the price cheaper and smells better.

I also picked up new Nivea lip balms that were on sale at drugstore.com. I got the matte Nivea for men one for my dad and the Olive Oil and Lemon one for me. The Olive Oil and Lemon one is actually an incredible lip balm. Only thing is though is that it tastes like shampoo. I'm over that now, but the first taste was dreadful and the only thing that would stop me from getting it again.
I also picked up a couple Covergirl mascaras. Mascara in Europe is ridiculously expensive for some reason, so I wanted to be sure I had enough. This mascara is basically the dupe for Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes. I actually even like it better because it doesn't smudge at all. It's a really nice mascara and very cheap.
I also got the Sonia Kashuk Limited edition eye on neutral matte/shimmer palette form Target. I had heard good things about these shadows, so I wanted to try them. I was really disappointed, however. The shadows are very small in size (I thought they would be bigger), and they have a TON of fallout (it's insane) so I have to apply them with a finger, not a brush. The pigmentation is also lacking. I do like the colors, though, so I did end up bringing this palette with me to France, and I use it every day. I just wouldn't advise buying it, that's all. Sad, because it was expensive.

I also got this Mango set from Boots (available at Target and drugstore.com). I had already been through one of the Mango shower gels before, so I wanted to repurchase. The shower gel is incredible. It has a nice lather, it's not drying, and it smells amazing, so I'm happy to be using this again. I am absolutely in love with the body butter, too, now. It smells amazing like the shower gel, it's incredibly hydrating, but it's not greasy in the slightest. Stay away from the scrub, however. It's crap. It smells good obviously, but it has a really waxy consistency and is hard to work with. The sugar and salt particles also melt before you can even scrub with them. The residue the scrub leaves is also horrendous. Just stick to the shower gel and the body butter.

I also got some stuff from Walmart before I left. I picked up a couple deodorants from Dove, because they make my favorite deodorant. Deodorant in Europe is also way too expensive, and I don't like the roller balls that they have here instead of sticks. Dove deodorant is soothing, hydrating, and actually works. I got the Blue Fig scent, which is new I think, and the Plum and Sakura Blossom scent. Both came with a 1 oz Plum and Sakura body spray which is really nice (not pictured).
I also picked up another Aloe Fresh lotion from Vaseline. This is my third time repurchasing this. I really love it, scent, feel, everything.
I got the Coverall powder from Wet n Wild. It does not "cover all" though, and it's not the best oil control powder. The packaging would do well with a mirror, too. However, it does have a very natural finish on the skin, which I do like, and it was cheap.
I picked up the Sensitive Skin SPF 60 sunscreen from Neutrogena. I really, really like this. It has a very nice matte finish and isn't at all oily, and it does not leave an obvious white cast. It's also a physical, not chemical, sunscreen. I tried the Neutrogena Helioplex sunscreens before, and they gave me a major rash, so I wanted something more natural.
I got a few travel size products in Spain from Dove and Tresemme, but I forgot to mention them earlier so I thought I'd do it now. The Dove shampoo is really nice, actually, and again, I really like the Dove body washes. Tresemme conditioners are not bad either.
Also, in this picture is my first French pharmacy purchase of 2014, a glass nail file and the pot form of Nuxe Rêve de Miel. Both are incredible. The original Nuxe lip balm is way better than the stick, by the way.

Back to drugstore.com, I got some tooth care. I picked up my favorite Marvis toothpaste in Jasmin Mint. It's the best tasting toothpaste in the world. I also got some toothbrushes because toothbrushes are really really expensive in Europe.

As much as I love French skincare, I still wanted to get a couple cleansers and a toner before leaving. I picked up the Burt's Bees Radiance Facial Cleanser and the Lumene Radiant Touch Refreshing Foam cleanser. Both are amazing and repurchases actually. They are sulfate free as well and smell incredible, especially the Lumene. I ordered this Clarifying Herbal Astringent from Earth Science to try, and I really like it so far. It's slightly exfoliating, hydrating, and the ingredients list is very nice (especially the zinc in it, which is great for cystic acne).
From Sephora, I picked out this Ren glowy skin set, which has the famous Glyco Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask, the Micropolish Cleanser, and the radiance serum. If I had to do it again, I'd give this a pass and go for the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. The Ren one is okay, but the effects are not as good as the Tata Harper. It's also only AHA (not BHA like the Tata), so it only exfoliates the surface of the skin and doesn't clear out the pore. I also don't like the smell of any of the products, and the serum makes me really oily (although it does work pretty well with hyperpigmentation).

Then of course, Sephora always gives samples. They gave me five, which was cool. Two Alien from Thierry Mugler perfume vials, a Versace Eros sample, a sample of a new Clinique primer, and a sample of the Lancôme Visionnaire (which I've already tried and liked, except for the heavy scent).

I hope you enjoyed! I absolutely love seeing what other people buy, so I thought you all might like this. I'll try to keep you guys updated with how everything works out.

Favorite nail polishes of 2013 (and favorite nail care)

When I went in to choose my top nail polishes for 2013, it wasn't very difficult. Although I have spent six months with no nail polish at all because I've been studying abroad, for the first six months of this year there were a few that were almost constantly on my fingers and toes.

1. The first polish I was wearing well into 2013 was Jack the Lad by Butter London. I did a whole post on it here because I love it so much. It's a forest green with light green and teal shimmer in. Two coats is enough to give you mesmerizing nails that last for ages.

2. Deborah Lippmann's Ray of Light was probably the only thing I wore on my nails for a couple months this year. It's probably the most gorgeous nail polish I own. The dark indigo base has tons of duo chrome flecks of glitter in it. The orange to green glitter reminds me of fall leaves. The formula is also amazing, and it kind of feels like actual enamel or gel.

3. I've had Butter London Knackered for a very long time, but it's only been this year that I've discovered its layering power. If you layer it over one coat of a light lavender purple like Revlon Colorstay Provence, you get the same effect that three or four coats of this would take. Also, if you want fast galaxy nails, one coat of this over a coat of black will land you amongst the stars in a minute.

4. The whole year I had mostly one nail polish on my toes. Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Mint Sorbet was the perfect pop of color for me this year. Just looking down at bright mint toes made my day, and since the formula is so opaque, long lasting and easy to work with, it was hard for me to choose anything else when I needed to paint the piggies in a pinch.

5. This year was also the year I discovered the Revlon Colorstay base and top coats. These are incredibly fast drying and they keep my color on for over a week. The top coat is also super shiny. Much love goes to these guys right here.

6. I also discovered the wonders of a regular nail file, not a metal one. The Deborah Lippmann file was quick to use, and my nails were way less flaky after discovering this beauty.

I think this has been a good nail year despite the six months of nothing!

What were your favorite nail products this year?
