Silicone Hair Products: Yes? No?

For some reason, silicone has become this horrible ingredient to have in hair products. Quite honestly, I have no clue why.

Some people say it just coats the hair, makes it dull looking, doesn't actually moisturize, weighs hair down (true for you fine-haired peeps), and makes it break.

But I'm a frizzy haired gal, and for me silicone has always been a miracle product. It tames my frizz, makes my hair shiny, and it turns my long, unmanageable lion's mane into soft kitten fuzz.

I find that if I go silicone-free for a while my hair becomes a tangly mess. It looks dull, feels like straw, and breaks like crazy. Since I ran out of the Dove conditioner I was using (which has a bunch of silicone, aww yeahh) and switched to the sulfate-free but also silicone-free L'Oréal EverLiso line, my hair was for the most part healthy, but it would get knotty and break off.

I was only using Phyto 9 Hair Day Cream in addition, which is silicone free. I actually have two tubes of the stuff to go through since I got it in a value pack (this one is almost out). But far as the Phyto goes, if you have thick hair, don't waste your money. It doesn't work that well, and it still left my hair feeling dry.

I then picked up the L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil with SILICONE, and my hair feels lovely again. It's back to being shiny and healthy, and since it's that bit more slippery, it doesn't tangle and break as easily.

So knock silicone all you want. I love it, and I'll never leave it out of my hair care.

  1. I agree so hard. Once my hair got past my chest, it gets tangled just from me looking at it if I don't have silicones in it.
