Review: YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

I was so excited when I got the chance to try out the YSL Effet Faux Cils mascara for half price (host sister works at L'Oréal, holla!!!). Everyone and their dog raves about this mascara, and even though I know the drugstore is filled with gems and that high end mascaras are almost never worth it (unless you're getting my all time favorite Trish one), something about the golden packaging and hefty luxury product price tag made me think that this should be the best mascara ever.

Packaging: the packaging is the most beautiful I have ever seen. The weighty gold tube with the YS that snaps closed perfectly with the L just makes me feel like a princess every time I pop this baby open.

Smell: Unfortunately, this mascara is perfumed, if you see the ingredients, it's got some parfum. It smells really good, kinda fruity, and it doesn't bother me, however, the fragrance could probably irritate those of you who have sensitive eyes, so try this at your own risk if you have sensitivity to fragrance.

Brush: the brush is a good size. It's not too big you can barely fit it on your eye, and you can still get the lower lashes with it. However, the brush doesn't feel like it grips the lashes at all, which is unusual for natural bristle brushes. I think it's the space between bristles and shortness of them that does this. I just feel like I'm wiping the mascara on my lashes, yet the volume it gets isn't that great compared to the likes of a five dollar Covergirl mascara. It gets pretty significant length, but nope, no separation. So Effets Faux Cils? Non. This ends up getting either a natural look, or a clumpy look. It really doesn't build up well.

Two coats on both eyes

Formula: the formula itself is very black, thick, and creamy. It doesn't get more than one coat without giving me lashes with stubby ends. This is not a long lasting mascara. Give it an hour, and it'll be all over my upper lids and smudged below my lower lashes all the way to where I put my concealer. I do have oily lids, but there are cheaper formulas that don't do this to me. It doesn't flake, just smudges. It removes okay, but not as well as it should considering it comes off on its own just fine all over my face.

One coat; nothing
Two coats; one coat
Two coats on both eyes
Two coats on both eyes. See how the lashes just look stuck together and not feathery?
Overall impressions: I really don't understand how anyone likes this mascara after having tried it for myself. It doesn't give me good volume or separation, and it smudges like crazy. I know a lot of people that like this though, so again this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't pay the price YSL asks for this, let alone one dollar. Yeah it's pretty and high end and stuff, but you can't judge a book by its cover. This is honestly one of the worst mascaras I have ever tried.

Not a fan. I don't like how it can't look good unless you're wearing eyeliner.
Have you tried this? Leave your thoughts down below! I lot of people do like this, so a variety of opinions is always good.
