Review: Klorane Hair Products (Mango + Papyrus)
I think my fascination with the whole Klorane brand began when I visited Paris when I was thirteen. It was in every single pharmacy (still is), and I think I just began to associate it with France.
The first things I've ever tried from Klorane were the Mango Butter shampoo and conditioner.
The shampoo was alright (and it smelled fantastic), but the conditioner did nothing for my hair: it made it worse. Keep in mind that I have very dry, frizzy, long hair. For oilier and more fine hair, the mango line might be something you'd like.
I did try the Peony shampoo from them after the Mango one ran out, and I did like how it made my scalp feel, I just hated the smell.
Anyway, I still thought after all that that I might like to try the Papyrus line from Klorane for frizzy hair. So I did. This was even worse.
My hair felt like straw after using it (it was a horrible tangly mess), and just now after changing conditioners and using hair treatments am I seeing my hair come back to life. Not to mention, it dried out my scalp very badly. And no one likes flakes. No one.
I'm still using the shampoo because I'm too much of a cheapskate to get a new one when I have more than half a bottle left, but trust me, I will not be repurchasing. I'm using the leftover conditioner as shave cream, which is a good tip: If you hate your conditioner, use it to shave. It works well, and you can use a cheap one that smells really good (Suave Green Apple, anyone?)
What am I using now to repair the damage?
I started off using the Casino brand mango conditioner (it was okay, but I already ran out of it) and the Ojon Damage Reverse™ Instant Restorative Hair Serum, which I obsess about constantly. I sadly just finished that up, too.
Now I'm using the Dove Nutritive Nourishing Treatment Conditioner. It says to use for one minute, but I use it from the beginning to the end of my shower (about 5-7 minutes). I like it so far. It's already given my hair some of its shine back, and it makes my hair a lot more manageable. It was also cheap (in France at least- it's expensive in the U.S.)
After towel drying my hair, I heat up some Egyptian Magic in the palms of my hands and run it through the ends, then using any excess on my baby hairs that tend to get really fuzzy in the morning. I use Egyptian Magic for almost anything, actually. It's my current nighttime face moisturizer, but it's also great for soothing cuts, sore lips, and pimples. It just happens to take some frizz out of the hair, too.
In the morning, I run the Phyto 9 day cream through my hair (ends first, working up to the nape of my neck). I really like this stuff. It's very lightweight, but it still adds shine and moisture and prevents frizz. Good stuff.
As far as shampoos and conditioners I would recommend highly that you can get in the states? I think y'all know my favorite of all time is Free Your Mane. It's perfect. It's sulfate-free, banishes frizz completely, smells good, makes hair soft, shiny, smooth, manageable, etc. (Oily haired gals might not like it though - try Rahua instead, especially the Tea Tree line). My runner up to that is the Serge Normant Meta Silk/Velour, but Free Your Mane is better and cheaper.
So all in all, I think I'm going to put my "love" for Klorane behind me. If it doesn't work, it just doesn't work. It doesn't matter how French it is. For those that do want to try it though, you can get it from drugstore.com.
