I like to try new things. Who doesn't? However, there are some staples I keep going back to that I know work for me.
As I was packing for France, I kind of got to thinking... What if I lost my luggage (and therefore all of my makeup, save my Z-Palette I have at home with my not as easily wearable eyeshadows) and had to start from scratch? What would I buy to replenish?
1. Revlon Photoready Concealer
I don't use foundation. I just use concealer to cover up some dark spots, zits if I have any, and maybe under my eyes. My go-to? I love theBalm Time Balm concealer, but I do think my Revlon Photoready is ultimately better. I have gone through three of them. I think that says something. It's just that bit creamier, easy to blend, matches me perfectly, and doesn't cake up. Now, I love theBalm for pin-point concealing zits over a foundation. When I do makeup on other people, it's one of the only concealers I'll use because it covers everything and lasts long. But I'm a girl that loves to slap on and blend, so the stick concealer is faster and easier. Who's got time for pin-pointing at 7 in the morning?
2. Clinique Stay Matte Powder
I've purchased this two or three times before. It used to be my go-to before I found the Rimmel Stay Matte. Now that the latter has been reformulated, I think I will go back to this one after I'm through with the RSM and my Trish powder. Don't get me wrong, I love the Trish powder, too, and it fits so well into my Trish palette. The Clinique is just a bit cheaper, and as I remember (it's been a while since I used it because I was using the RSM) it's not cakey at all and is very good at absorbing any shine.
3. Trish McEvoy Easy Going Blush
I love this blush. It's pigmented, blends so smoothly, and yes, fits in my palettes. But the color. The COLOR. It's perfect and goes with everything. When in doubt? Easy Going. Always.
4. Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze
I use this stuff all the time. If I don't have time to do a full-on eye look, I slap this baby on. It's gorgeous, and it's all you need aside from mascara to get a great, long-lasting eye look. I just pat and blend out all over the lids with my ring finger, then with a smudge brush, blend it out along my lower lash line. It's also a great base under other shadows. I also like Bold Gold (it's my go-to for a night out) and Tough as Taupe from this line, but BTTB is my favorite by far and definitely my most used.
5. Wet n Wild Comfort Zone Palette
Wet n Wild just makes the BEST eyeshadows you can get at the drugstore (and anywhere else, too, really). They've got a bit of fallout, but just tap off the brush. No big. I especially love this palette. It's so cheap, and it has the perfect neutrals. I don't really use the bright green shade on the right, but I love the other colors, and for five bucks, who cares? Even the more unwearable colors make great eyeliners. Other shadows from WnW that I love are the Walking on Eggshells Palette, and singles in Panther (great liner), Brulée, and Nutty.
6. Trish McEvoy Finish Line
This baby will give you as many liner colors as you have shadows. Just add a small drop (to a designated side of the shadow pan as to not harden and render unusable the rest of the shadow) and use an angled liner brush to get perfect liner that does not move all day. This stuff will last forever, and for 20 bucks for a zillion colors of liner it's technically a bargain.
7. Maybelline Full 'n' Soft Mascara
I've gone through a few tubes of this stuff, and I think it's definitely my drugstore go-to. Now for mascara, I wish I could say that I would repurchase the Trish McEvoy Volumizing Mascara again and again, but let's be real: It's 30 bucks, mascara only lasts about three months, and I'm a college student. I'll invest in stuff that will last me a long time, but drugstores are where I'll shop for mascara regularly. If I do want to treat myself, however, I will go for the Trish over this.
8. Nuxe Rêve de Miel lip balm stick
Favorite lip balm right here. I discovered this beauty in France, and I will definitely be stocking up before leaving. It's matte (I hate shine on my lips, as I've probably said a billion times before) and it's so hydrating. It tastes good, too. That never hurts. I think you can get it in America from beauty.com, but if you can't, I would go for a good ol' tube of Cherry Chapstick otherwise.
Now, you might have noticed that I didn't mention any bronzers or brow products. That's because it wasn't until this year that I started using them, so I haven't tried too many.
I've only used two bronzers: the Revlon matte bronzer and the Rimmel Sun Bronze, neither of which I would repurchase, not because I don't like the product, but because the packaging is such a pain in the butt, the product isn't worth it.
First of all, Revlon needs to get it together and make those four colors of bronzers separate so that way I don't have half a product I don't use. Also, take out the brush no one uses because it's horrible and makes the package twice the size it needs to be.
And, Rimmel, I just can't take you anywhere, can I? The little pans of product covered with the plastic lid just doesn't cut it. They are the worst to travel with.
As for brows, I use an eyeshadow from a discontinued Dior palette, so I can't really repurchase that one.
I really want to try the NYC Sunny Bronzer that everyone keeps going on about and the Anastasia Brow Wiz.
But yeah, that's it y'all!
