Spot treatments are important if you have any blemishes. When you have a blemish, you don't want to go spreading super drying treatments all over your face. That just makes the problem worse. What you can do is take a concentrated product to the breakout only.
I still don't like anything too drying when it comes to spot treatments. I don't want to dry the crap out of a zit overnight because a) when I wake up in the morning, not only will it still be there, but it'll be super irritated and dehydrated and b) it could get all flaky and nasty, and that's another problem. You don't want to create more problems when treating a problem.
I like a few ingredients when it comes to my spot treatments.
Salicylic acid is my favorite ingredient because it unblocks pores without drying. My favorite treatment is the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask (yes, you can use a bit as an overnight spot treatment, too).
I also like tea tree oil to disinfect without drying. I find it's great for killing bacteria.
I'll break out certain treatments for different problems. For example, I like the Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion for under the skin blemishes, the Effaclar Duo + for all kinds of zits and dark marks, and the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion for about to pop kinds of zits.
Aside from that, just keep a good routine to prevent breakouts and only whip these out every so often.
